Making the Holidays Bright…2020 Style!
A COMMUNITY TRADITION OF GIVING
When Neighbors are going through financial hardship, Christmastime can be an especially difficult time of year. With the help of community volunteers, Cornerstone will host 350 children and their families at Cornerstone Christmas. In years’ past, this has been a large, festive holiday event where parents secretly shop for their children’s gifts while volunteers keep their children involved in fun activities — turning the burden of Christmas into a celebration with their family.
Due to Covid-19 concerns, Cornerstone Christmas cannot be held in person this year. But, as with many things in 2020, we are pivoting to a new event model that is designed with community health in mind. Please be assured, the core principles of Cornerstone Christmas - dignity for our Neighbor families, and the Christmas morning surprise for the kids - remains unchanged.
For the 2020 version of Cornerstone Christmas, Neighbors will attend one of three events in early December where they will shop online for gifts. Then they will return for a drive-thru pickup event where they will receive the gifts they have chosen, all wrapped and ready for Christmas morning, along with coats, stockings, decorations, and food for the holidays.
The important dates for Neighbors are as follows:
Tuesday, Dec 1 - 6:00 - 9:00pm - Neighbor shopping event
Thursday, Dec 3 - 6:00 - 9:00pm - Neighbor shopping event
Saturday, Dec 5 - 6:00 - 9:00pm - Neighbor shopping event
Saturday, Dec 12 - Drive-thru pickup event
Many of you have participated in Cornerstone Christmas as volunteers, and look forward to that involvement again each year. There will still be important volunteer roles that need to be filled, but they will be somewhat different than in previous years.
Our critical volunteer needs are:
Coat drives - Based on extensive feedback and demand from past years, we are focusing the coat drives on hoodies and Sherpa jackets this year. If you would like to help collect coats, please email christmas@cornerstonenct.org
Stocking stuffers - As always, we need lots of candy and small gifts for stocking stuffers. If you would like to help collect stocking stuffers, please email christmas@cornerstonenct.org
Christmas tree bundles - In a change for this year, we will be providing Christmas tree bundles, including lights and decorations, as needed. If you would like to help collect Christmas trees and related décor, please email christmas@cornerstonenct.org
Gift wrapping - As part of the overall process change for this year, we will need a number of volunteers to help with gift wrapping during the week of Dec 7. If you would like to help with gift wrapping, please watch for the Signup Genius notification.
